Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez, who was sentenced to life behind bars for murder, was found dead inside his prison cell on Wednesday morning.
Prison officials have confirmed that Hernandez died after hanging himself in his cell early Wednesday in Massachusetts. The suicide comes just days after being acquitted of a double murder.
According to a statement released by the Department of Correction, Aaron was discovered unresponsive inside his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley around 3 a.m. The 27-year-old was rushed to UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster where an hour later, he was pronounced dead.
According to department spokesperson Christopher Fallon, the former tight end tied a bed sheet to the cell window to hang himself. In order to stop officials from entering, he tried to jam the door with a plethora of items.
In 2015, Hernandez, who has a little girl with financée Shayanna Jenkins, was found guilty of first-degree murder of semi-pro football player, Odin Lloyd.
