Gabrielle Union has a starring role on a hit BET drama, is landing on covers like Women’s Health all thanks to her killer bod, and of course, is being a wife and mom to Dwyane Wade and company. But apparently, this is nothing compared to her fellows, Janelle Monae, Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi and Aja Naomi King.
On Thursday night, these four ladies, otherwise known as the “Next Generation,” were honored during the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Gala “for excelling and elevating their crafts. “I feel honored to be recognized by my first tribe, Black women,” Janelle told HipHollywood while on the red carpet.
Union, who hosted the annual event held in Los Angeles, explained that she is thrilled to simply be among these women who are are “so talented and so active. They do their jobs, they are producing their own shows, they are leading the charge of resistance against tyranny.”
That’s when Union added, “They motivate me daily. I check my Twitter feed and I’m like ‘ok, not doing enough.’”
Congratulations to all the night’s honorees.
