Spoiler Alert: Justin Theroux is playing one sinister husband in the new thriller The Girl on the Train. But he’s not concerned about his wife Jennifer Aniston seeing his portrayal. Instead he revealed to HipHollywood, it’s his mother that will be most critical of the role.
“I don’t know what’s she going to say,” laughed Theroux. “She’s actually very critical. She’ll probably say she likes it, and then slam me like a mom does thinking she’s giving me a compliment. Like I don’t think it was your best work.”
In the film (based on the bestselling novel of the same name) Emily Blunt plays Rachel Watson, an alcoholic who is reeling from a divorce and finds herself entangled in a missing persons investigation. Theroux plays her former husband Tom, and let’s just say he’s not that loyal.
“It’s hard to kind of talk about it without giving too much away,” said Theroux. “But what I like about the film in general is that it’s kind of told through the lens of these three strong female characters … and it’s kind of like this slow burn, they lay one card down at a time.”
Blunt revealed that she and Theroux have been pals for years and enjoyed the chance to work with him for the first time. “It was great having him on set because he brought this sort of levity that I think you kind of need with a film like this. But it also was kind of surreal doing certain scenes with him as well.”
Theroux also admitted that he figured out Blunt was pregnant right before they started filming, and helped her keep the secret from the crew. “She came over and we were just hanging out,” recounts Theroux. “I was like ‘do you want a drink, a beer’ and she was like ‘no, no I’m good’ and I was like ‘what’s going on?’ We hadn’t even started shooting yet. And she was ‘I’m pregnant, and I can’t tell anyone because I don’t want the production to know.”
