Maybe now that Kobe Bryant has retired from the NBA, he will have more time to work on his personal relationships. Namely, the one between he and his parents.
Apparently, it’s been three years since the future Hall of Famer has spoken to his parents, Joe and Pamela Bryant. Why, you ask? Well, according to ESPN, it all stems from the time they tried to sell his high school memorabilia without his consent. Since then, the relationship has been strained to say the least. “Our relationship is shit,” Bryant tells ESPN writer Ramona Shelburne. “I say [to them], ‘I’m going to buy you a very nice home, and the response is ‘That’s not good enough’?” he says. “Then you’re selling my shit?”
After selling a half million dollars worth of Kobe’s personal effects, the Bryants issued a statement that surely pissed him off even more.
“We regret our actions and statements related to the Kobe Bryant auction memorabilia. We apologize for any misunderstanding and unintended pain we may have caused our son and appreciate the financial support that he has provided to us over the years.”
Luckily, the ESPN article does state that the Black Mamba’s relationships with his sisters, Sharia and Shaya, is actually quite good. “They’re very smart, college-educated [women],” Kobe says. “I’m really proud of them. They were able to get their own jobs, get their own lives, take care of themselves. Now they have a better sense of self, of who they are as people, instead of being resentful because they were relying on me.
Man, money really can ruin relationships, but hopefully Kobe can work things out with his parents sooner than later.
