What in the world happened to Mariah Carey during her New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square? Who is to blame? And will she ever be the same? We need answers!

During the multi-Grammy Award winner’s set at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in New York City, the pop star suffered a series of malfunctions that has officially became the talk of 2017. Talk about ringing in the new year on a low note … literally.

The first mishap occurred while the mother-of-two started to sing her hit track, “Emotions.” Off the top, it became very clear that she was lip syncing when you hear the 46-year-old tell her back up dancers “just walk me down” while the track played over the top.

It continued to go down hill when the track kept playing and Carey wasn’t singing a darn word. Oops. “We can’t hear,” she then said while attempting to keep up with the audio.

Folks, it didn’t end there.

Carey oddly just stood on stage like a deer in headlights while her dancers danced in circles. “We’re missing some of these vocals, but it is what it is,” she said at one point. “Let the audience sing.”

She added, “I’m trying to be a good sport here.”

And as if the “Emotions” meltdown wasn’t enough, Mariah’s downfall of a performance continued into “We Belong Together.” At one point during the classic song, the performer completely stopped making any attempt to sing.

“It just don’t get any better,” she said before walking off stage. Yikes.

Following the uncomfortable performance, Nick Cannon’s ex-wife posted an “oh well” GIF on Instagram with the caption: “Sh*t happens. Have a happy and healthy new year everybody! Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.”

It’s still unclear what exactly went wrong, but the event representative, Nicole Perna, tells the Associated Press that “Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances.”

According to reports, there was some kind of altercation earlier in the day with Carey’s team and the audio producer who apparently has worked the event for several years. “Every monitor and in-ear device worked perfectly,” Robert Goldstein said in a statement. “ I can’t comment beyond that and don’t know what her nontechnical issue may have been.”
