If you follow Nick Cannon on social media, you’ll know that the rapper often freestyles about topics he is passionate about; whether it be race or politics. But in Cannon’s most recent flow, the rapper tackles his failed marriage with Mariah Carey.
On Thursday, Nick released a freestyle titled “Divorce Papers.” Contrary to the title, the father of two didn’t stick to rumors that he won’t sign off on divorce papers, rather, his rollercoaster of emotions following the split and how his twins Morocco and Monroe are dealing.
“We single now but we really need to think about is how a child deals/ how a child feels/ because we got two and they brilliant for real/ resilient for real,” he raps.
“My daughter said daddy why your eyes in tears/ because last time I dropped your brother off I didn’t get a call the next day and it felt like years/ and Ima be honest/ sometimes I hate to hear you’re on the other line having fun without me/ I wonder if my son will ever doubt me…/ What’s love I don’t care about it I just want my kids to be safe.”
Cannon ended the track with “lets sign these papers.”
The actor and America’s Got Talent host also opened up to journalist Karen Civil about why he wrote the emotional track. “My purpose for creating this ‘Divorce Papers’ freestyle was not to feed the tabloid chatter, or even to diffuse it. This was strictly a creative way for me to express my frustrations with the media, the naysayers, myself and ultimately with the voices in my head,” he said.
He explained, “One late night in my studio, after hearing the recent accusations against me and my character, I turned on my drum machine, found this amazing Willie Hutch sample, looped it, and went into the booth and let it all out. It felt great!”
Cannon added, “I’ve been sitting on the song for almost a week now because I was really torn on whether or not I should release it. The last thing I would ever want to do is add fuel to the fire, especially a fire that was fabricated by the press. But, ultimately I felt it was necessary to clear the air and set the record straight once and for all.”
Nick and Mairah separated in 2014 and officially filed for divorce in 2015.
“My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy. I am happy for her and all her new endeavors, both personal ones and professional ones,” he told Civil. “I sincerely hope the media doesn’t once again try to manipulate my words or my purpose for releasing this song. As the world knows, I am an open book and I’m proud of that. When it comes to expressing myself, I take the fearless approach and that’s what I chose to do here.”
