More information is starting to surface about Omar Mateen, the man responsible for the shooting deaths of 49 people at an Orlando gay nightclub earlier this month.
Following the horrific attacks, it was reported that Mateen was gay and that he had profiles on several gay dating websites, including Grindr. Now, the shooter’s former lover is speaking out confirming Mateen’s alleged sexuality and what he thinks triggered the attacks.
According to “Miguel,” the name used to protect his identity, he and Mateen were “friends with benefits.” Miguel claims the two of them met on Grindr and carried out a two-month “relationship” which included meeting at a hotel at least 15-20 times.
During the attack, Omar pledged allegiance to Isis; however, according to Miguel, he believes the attack was revenge on Latinos for feeling rejected by Puerto Ricans. “I believe this is not terrorism,” Miguel told Univision anchor Maria Elena Salinas.
Apparently, Omar grew angry after learning a Puerto Rican man he had been with was HIV positive. “He hate gay Puerto Ricans for all the stuff he did to him,” Miguel said. “I believe this crazy horrible thing he did was for revenge.”
The former lover also admitted that Mateen’s wife knew he was gay and that his father forced them into an arranged marriage. “He was looking for love,” Miguel said. “He was looking to be embraced.”
