Just moments following the July 2016 shooting death of Philando Castile, police handcuffed his girlfriend and placed her and her 4-year-old daughter in the back of a squad car. Now, new footage of the moments that unfolded while they waited in the backseat of the vehicle has folks around the nation outraged.
In the heartbreaking visual, released on Wednesday by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, you see a cuffed Diamond Reynolds sitting with her daughter while both trying to remain calm. But it was the 4-year-old who wound up pleading for her mother to stop screaming so that she doesn’t also get shot.
“Mom, please stop cussing and screaming cause I don’t want you to get shooted,” the little girl can be heard saying. “I can keep you safe.”
After pleading again for her mother to not take the cuffs off, Diamond said, “They’re not gonna shoot me, OK? I’m already in handcuffs.”
“Don’t take them off,” the girl said. “I wish this town was safer.”
Another video released on Wednesday shows dash cam footage of the officer fatally shooting Castille, who was approached during a traffic stop while Reynolds and her daughter were in the car. During the stop, Castille admitted to having a gun, but was killed when he reached for his wallet, according to Reynolds.
Officer Jeronimo Yanez, 29, was acquitted on Friday of manslaughter after testifying that Philando was not following commands to not pull out the weapon and that he feared for his life.
